Why you should want to do PA school supplemental applications

“I applied to that program because they had no supplemental and it was super quick!”

-You may have heard this, or even thought of it yourself. It’s true, applications are not glamorous and no one really loves having to do them. Here is why you should alter the narrative, and want to do these longer applications.

Long-term rewards

Talking from personal experience, every program I interviewed at, had a long supplemental application. Meaning: had I skipped those ones, I wouldn’t have started PA school that year. The short term annoyance and usage of time is just a drop in the bucket of the long-term rewards, an acceptance and joining the career you’ve been aspiring to. When you think about it like that, typing a couple more questions really isn’t too much to ask.

Numbers are more likely to be in your favor

If a program has an easy application process, there’s an increased likelihood to be a greater number of applicants, and you are competing against higher numbers and lower odds of getting in. Naturally, since supplementals do deter many (but not you, since you are reading this blog), there tends to be less people applying, and the odds are tipped in your favor if you are one to brave the storm of a longer application.

The program probably cares more

Oftentimes, it is hard to differentiate yourself in CASPA. You have your statement and experiences, and that’s about it. Having a supplemental application or more questions to answer gives you the chance to better showcase who you are and why you deserve a seat in their program!

More opportunity to showcase yourself

If the program is going through the effort to ask more about you, and read more content, they probably have increased investment in their students. They want to know those answers because they want to select quality students. This also benefits you as these will be your future peers, and professional colleagues who you may refer to as a future provider.

Ultimately, if you like the program enough, it shouldn’t deter you, but if it does – look back at these reasons why it may actually benefit you to have a longer application. If you didn’t already know, when searching programs on MyPAbox, it will notate if there is a supplemental application to complete. Maybe now you will seek out programs that have these!
