The Best Parts of PA School

The Best Parts of Physician Assistant School

1. The people

Basically, you will meet some of the most awesome people in PA school. The vetting process is so difficult that by the time you are actually in a cohort, everyone is pretty great. They will be all different ages from all different medical backgrounds across the country, and it is awesome.

You are all in this together on the journey to be a PA. Make the most of your time and get to know your classmates! They will also be your future colleagues that you may refer to.

2. The learning

You will learn so much, at an exceptionally rapid pace. Although it can feel overwhelming at first, you will slowly get the hang of it and see your successes. It’s a pretty awesome feeling to feel yourself conquering such masses of information you never previously thought possible.

You also get to learn pretty cool skills, like suturing, lumbar punctures, splinting…the list goes on. Embrace it, because no other period of life will be quite like this one!

3. The new

You will experience (likely) an entirely new area to you. Even if you are from nearby, you will likely be immersed in at least a couple new environments during your clinical year.

Although some may find this intimidating, it is such a quality opportunity! What other time of life do you go to a different job every month? Utilize this time to find new areas and new aspects of medicine you enjoy.

4. The discovery

You will discover a lot about yourself. Your ideals and favorite specialties will likely completely change, it does for many. I know someone that during didactic was passionate about pediatrics, but left PA school passionate about orthopedic surgery.

I know another that was gunning for an emergency department PA position, but after rotations changed their preference to dermatology. You seriously do not know what will happen, so above all, keep an open mind. You can the variety of PA programs that you qualify for through myPAbox.

5. The accomplishment

PA school is time consuming, there’s hard days, and overall it’s a very unique experience. What underscores the PA educational experience is the sense of accomplishment you should have. You made it to that point, you conquered, and you are becoming a provider. You are effectively learning the art of medicine. Don’t lose sight or gratitude for the feeling of accomplishment that you deserve.
