Why I Wish to Become a Physician Assistant
A Physician Assistant encompasses various aspects of what I want my life to consist of. I find gratification and a strong desire in solving puzzles, whether it’s a daily crossword or putting a patient’s chief complaint and history together to unmask a diagnosis.
On top of puzzle solving, I need flexibility in specialties and location of my future jobs because the thought of being locked into a specialty induces a mental claustrophobia. But most importantly, I crave making a positive impact on the world.
Physician Assistants (PA) have the wonderful ability to evolve through specialties from the beginning of their career. As someone that has trouble deciding between eggs and oatmeal for breakfast, being locked into a specialty, as in other careers, frightened me. Being permitted to grow in one field for several years and then being able to transition, without additional schooling, is very appealing to me. And it is no secret that people will always be sick, but fortunately, there will always be a demand for healthcare providers to care for them.
As the PA field expands, the amount of PAs working in hospitals and private practices is also expanding, meaning PAs can always find opportunities to care for these patients. A frequent opportunity that many PA students capitalize on is deciding to work where they have their clinical rotations. This makes MyPABox an invaluable resource from the beginning for discovering programs in locations that you would consider working and living in after graduation.
While growing up I always enjoyed puzzle games, and now have the luxury of turning that hobby into a career. Patient’s will come for an appointment with numerous presenting symptoms and it will be my job, as the PA, to put the pieces together to unmask a diagnosis and build a treatment plan. But the best part is that I will always have a team and supervising physician that I can bounce my ideas off of when I get stumped. This was a big swaying point for me in choosing a career because I have always been a part of sports teams, and excel in being a team player. It is so exciting to know that solving medical puzzles is something that will keep me on my toes for the rest of my life.
But if you’re not a puzzle lover like me, don’t worry because MyPABox is able to take the puzzle pieces of applying to PA programs, and piece together which program you are a good fit for.
Now the biggest reason that I want to go into medicine, particularly as a PA, is because I want to make a positive impact on the world. I find a sense of fulfillment and joy both when I am volunteering or caring for people at work. Growing up, and to this day, I seek out volunteer opportunities, whether it is at a food bank or going overseas to volunteer in a clinic. There is something special about these experiences that bring me the ultimate level of elation. Knowing that I will be able to take two things I am passionate about and combine them, and call it a career, is a dream.
It has taken me a lot of hard work to get into PA school, and continues to take discipline to succeed in my didactic year. However, keeping the reason I want to become a PA in the forefront of my mind has made the challenge easier.
