Securing PA Shadowing Opportunities: A Proven Strategy Guide

Unlocking Physician Assistant (PA) shadowing opportunities can feel like cracking a code for many aspiring Pre-PAs. But with the right strategies, you can secure valuable experiences that will help you stand out in the application process. Here’s how I did it.

Networking Online is a Game-Changer:

First, networking online was a game-changer. Joining Facebook groups, LinkedIn, and specific PA forums connected me with PAs and opened doors I didn’t even know existed. Never underestimate the power of these platforms for reaching out and finding leads.

Leverage Your Healthcare Job:

Leverage your existing healthcare job if you have one. For me, asking PAs I already worked with to shadow them was easier than I thought. Many were happy to help once I expressed interest, and it opened up shadowing slots I wouldn’t have had otherwise.

Volunteering Can Build Connections:

Another great resource was volunteering at clinics. Volunteering allows you to build relationships with healthcare professionals, including PAs, who can offer shadowing opportunities once trust is established.

Utilize PA Organizations:

Additionally, reaching out to PA organizations like AAPA and their local chapters provided access to programs designed specifically to help Pre-PAs with shadowing opportunities. Don’t hesitate to take advantage of these resources.

Persistence Pays Off:

Finally, persistence and flexibility paid off. Following up and offering time slots that worked for the PA were key to making it happen.

With these steps, I unlocked multiple shadowing opportunities—and so can you! Take action today, and watch those doors open.
